Poor or wealthy, educated or illiterate, working class mum or high society darling - there is no hiding place from this high power version of the 'fun relaxation' drug we all once knew as marijuana. In my practice as a Cannabis Cessation Specialist I witness the unpleasant side of Skunk on a daily basis - and the trend looks set to continue. So what can you do as a concerned parent when you discover that one of your offspring has begun an association with Skunk?

Don't Panic - The natural parental reaction can be loosely classified as 'panic'. It can take several forms (outrage, despair, anger) and then swiftly lead to inappropriate action (confrontation, blame, punishment). You need a plan - as the parent you are beginning a journey (albeit not one of your choosing) and if you want to get to the destination quickly, painlessly and with all the passengers safe and well, then you'd better get the map out before you start driving.

You are the Adult - Yes your son may well have stubble on his chin, and your daughter is probably 3" taller than you now she is 19 years old, but during this whole journey on which you have unwillingly embarked you must never forget that they are just kids. Of course they are disappointing you at this moment in life, and it hurts like crazy that they have made a terrible error of judgement (despite the two decades you have spent nurturing them), however you have to act as an adult consistently throughout. There will be times when you'll feel a tremendous urge to blow your top, the temptation to scream and punch the wall will be extreme, but fight it every step of the way whilst the source of the frustration is within earshot. Sure, go to the park and wail like a banshee to get rid of the pent up anxiety, just don't let your child witness the display! Think back to your youth and be honest - remember all those daft opinions you had and the poor choices you made at the same age.

Plan Intelligently - Setting goals and benchmarks is crucial in the initial stages of any cannabis based family trauma. In simplistic terms these can be classified as; 'Where are we now' 'Where do we want to be' and 'What are we going to do to get there'. This is not a time for unrealistic expectations or delusions regarding the seriousness of the situation. Unfortunately 95% of families will fail to structure their approach and therefore are doomed to dramatically increase the length of time that it takes to reach a suitable solution, and greatly intensify the collective pain felt during the process. Getting experienced third party input sets the scene and allows a plan to be created that ensures all concerned understand their place within, and commitment to, the speediest possible resolution. Is it all going to go smoothly from there on in? Well, you have to expect hiccups along the way and revisions to your route as unexpected additional new challenges enter the mix, but these will be far easier to manage and considerably less stress inducing when you have applied process to the situation.

Work the Problem - The expression 'The only time success comes before work is in the dictionary' is very appropriate when you are a parent managing your child through this period of cannabis dependence. Whilst life may have felt busy prior to the discovery that your offspring was dabbling in drug use - it will now be ten times more hectic. Expect your family crisis requirements to become all consuming; push any expectations of free time to one side; cut work hours down to the minimum possible; ignore time consuming hobbies; dodge social commitments; forget those romantic weekends away. Prioritise, focus and dedicate yourself to getting your child through this period and you will reap the rewards long term. Not allowing resentment to spoil your efforts is undoubtedly going to be a huge test of character, and again having a professional intermediary working on your 'team' can pay dividends.

No Regrets & Stay Vigilant - So you've reached the point whereby you feel confident that your child can reject the allure of cannabis and you are feeling that the pressure is off somewhat. You are acutely aware of the danger signs associated with a relapse and are ready to take action should any occur. However, the emotional cost to the entire family in reaching this stage will have been considerable, and there are still key considerations for you as a parent. Re-building 'normal' family life is often not a simple matter of resuming previous activities and sitting back and enjoying the harmony that once existed. Time has been lost, careers have suffered, siblings needs ignored, money has been spent, energy expended, plans have been put on hold, and the darker side of every family members personality has been exposed. Ensuring that an environment exists whereby no resentment surfaces will be the final part of the process, and it will require as much dedication, planning and energy as breaking the initial cannabis dependence did.

Are you experiencing issues with cannabis dependency?

Are you seeking a solution to cannabis addiction on behalf of a loved one?

Are you aware that cannabis is a controlling influence in your life?

Are you looking for a confidential, personal, permanent solution?

Tom Downham welcomes contact from those who seek his specialist assistance in this area.
Web
http://www.quit-cannabis-now.com
Email
info@downhamconsulting.com
(c) Tom Downham 2009 - All Rights Reserved Worldwide

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Tom_Downham

Finally a Proven Quit Marijuana Program With a 100% Success Rate - CLICK HERE!

Helping You to Help Your Adult Child Leave Addiction Behind

Finally a Proven Quit Marijuana Program With a 100% Success Rate - CLICK HERE!

Over the years, we have written many articles for ezines.com and every month they send us a traffic report and our lifetime top performing article is "Freeing the Parents of Adult Alcoholics and Addicts". This leads of to an obvious conclusion: there are a lot of parents out there searching for ways to extricate themselves from the manipulative clutches of their addicted adult children.
Granted, it's a difficult problem. How does a loving parent actually help an addicted son or daughter? Should you continue to meet their unending demands or do you follow a "tough love" approach and cut them off until they straighten up? Neither works well, and both are nearly impossible to maintain, so what do you do?
Try a middle path. Offering to pay for treatment - assuming the treatment is one of the rare effective options rather than the usual ineffectual offering of the AA/12 Step/ Minnesota Model majority - is a good start.
Ceasing to protect them from the logical consequences of their choices is also necessary because they have been protected for a very long time, if you are currently supporting them. Remembering that this lifestyle is their choice, not some mythical "disease", also helps you feel less guilty about ramping down financial support.
I watched my own parents go through this with one of my brothers. He was bleeding them dry but they kept supporting him to the tune of $5000 a month. They couldn't seem to understand why he wouldn't "get a grip", stop doing drugs, and get a job. Come on now, if you want to give me $60,000 tax free a year tax for doing nothing...
Eventually, however, they decided to listen to Ed and me. We put Ed in the middle between my parents and my brother and he had to do certain things each month in order to get his money, which he had to get from Ed, not my parents. And he was given a schedule showing how the money was going to be decreased each month until it dwindled down to $0 over the course of a year.
This did infuriate my brother. But it also worked and today he is self-supporting and not doing drugs. I might also add, that because he is now working again, and not being supported by my parents, he has regained his self-respect and that is an important component in keeping him from going back to abusing drugs.
Obviously, this is not the only way out of this mess, but it is a way that worked because my parents had a lot of support from us, to stay strong and not cave-in, in the face of my brother's anger over his perceived mistreatment.
Since then, we have performed similar services for several other families in our area and those have turned out well. If you have a situation with your addicted adult child and need help, please give us a call. You can work your way out of it.

Dr. Edward Wilson and Dr. Mary Ellen Barnes have developed alternative alcohol recovery and moderation programs since 1990. The lies, deception, and self-destructive habits were taking a toll on our family and I realized it was time to practice "tough love."
Our family was united in the decision that Sara couldn't live with us and continue her destructive lifestyle. We began by taking her car, cell phone, and money. At that point, my beautiful 19-year-old daughter became a street person, living from house to house, carrying a duffel bag. At Christmas we gave her a lot of clothes, because we didn't want to give her money that she would use to buy drugs. She traded some of the clothes for drugs and her drug friends stole the rest.
At this point I was desperate. I went to the police departments in three counties to try to get them to arrest the drug dealers that were supplying my daughter. I went to two attorneys and one judge seeking help. Sara was admitted to the local detox center and attended Narcotics Anonymous meetings. Many drug offenders were court-ordered to attend these NA meetings. My daughter made some new drug contacts at the meetings and was able to continue her drug use in the detox center until she failed their drug test.
Throughout this ordeal I had been praying to God, however I learned that God answers prayer in His way and time. One day my daughter called me in a panic. Her male friend had assaulted her. I arrived to find her lying on the floor with a black eye and cuts and scrapes all over her. The door of her trailer had been pulled off the hinges and windows were broken. Trembling, she looked up at me and said, "Mom, I don't want to live like this anymore."
Soon after we brought her home, our pastor recommended the Teen Challenge Center for women in Columbus, Ohio. We called the center and received information on the admissions process. At times Sara questioned her decision to enter a treatment program, but after talking with the staff at Teen Challenge, she agreed to give it a try.
Teen Challenge Columbus is a residential treatment center for adult women. While she was there, Sara lived in a home-like atmosphere, but in a closely supervised and structured environment. The program focused on identifying and correcting the underlying causes for Sara's addiction, rather than trying to apply a Band-Aid to the problem. Intensive Bible study and scriptural counseling helped Sara realize she had hit bottom and needed to turn her life over to God.
Although the program was demanding, and at times Sara felt like quitting, she stuck with it. After twelve months she completed the program, however at that time she was not just released to fend for herself. Teen Challenge arranged for employment, mentors, and continued interaction with the center after her release to ease the transition.
I am delighted to report that five years after completing Teen Challenge, Sara is still drug free. She has completed college and is working as a teacher. She was married this spring and is looking forward to having children of her own.
To all the parents who are where I was five years ago, I want to assure you that there is hope. Often, parents see such testing as an invasion of privacy or worry about the strain it will put on the relationship between them and their children. The simple fact is that if you suspect that your child is using marijuana, taking the time to test them can be very important. Drugs, including marijuana, can lead to very poor decision making. In many cases, marijuana is used in conjunction with other drugs, including those that can be potentially harmful or fatal.
Like any other parenting decision, determining whether or not to test your child for marijuana is entirely up to you. If your child plays sports or seeks employment, they will likely be subject to random testing, which can have major consequences if the results come back positive. For many parents, the ability to learn these results at home and confidentially is very important. The sooner you know the truth about whether or not your child is using drugs, the sooner you can put your mind at ease or begin work to help steer them back onto the right path.
If you suspect that your child may be using drugs, it is certainly not an invasion of privacy to administer at home drug tests. As a parent, you are responsible for the safety and well being of all of your children. The unfortunate truth is that young people are using drugs at an alarming rate and many parents find themselves feeling powerless to do anything about it. By learning how to recognize drug use and taking the time to recognize when asking your child to submit to testing serves their best interest, you are certainly doing what is best for their welfare and for your family.
While marijuana is considered less dangerous than many drugs out there, there is still strong evidence that it can lead to the use of other drugs. Furthermore, use of marijuana can cause a lack of interest in doing other things and can result in an unhealthy attitude and approach to life. If your child is using marijuana, they will find themselves at risk of losing jobs, the ability to do many extracurricular school activities, and more if they are caught. Taking the time to talk with your child about these risks and to administer an at home marijuana drug test if you suspect use can be one of the best things you can do to keep them safe.
At the end of the day, only you can decide if you should drug test your child. The simple truth is that you may in fact feel as though you have invaded their privacy. What is most important to remember, however, is that you are doing what is needed to keep your child safe. Drug use destroys lives and families. Don't let your suspicions harm your relationship with your child and don't remain in the dark if you believe that drug use is occurring. At home drug testing kits are safe, confidential, and reliable, and for many parents they offer the help you need to keep your child protected.

There are many medical home test kits on the market today. If you or someone you know ever needs one, there are three things to consider... confidentiality, accuracy and a fair price. The easiest way to pass such a test is not to take the drugs being tested for. But if you have so indulged and are willing to risk the consequences of tampering with a drug test (which at best, means keeping the job or at worst, breaking the law in some states) then this article will be of assistance..

Steps
Urine Testing

Avoid spiking or masking the urine sample. This is a method used to throw off testing equipment from seeing certain results. Commercial and OTC chemicals containing nitrats were once used to mask THC but are now commonly tested for. i.e. Mary Jane Super Clean 13 (liquid soap), Urinaid (glutaraldehyde), THC Free (acid), Klear (nitrite), Urine Luck (pyridinium chlorochromate), TestKlear, Golden Seal, Terminator Gold, Stealth, Clean-X, and Instant Clean. These products are all detectable, and will result in a failed drug screen.

Dilute the sample itself. Dilution is the process of reducing the concentration of drug or drug metabolites in the sample. This is accomplished by adding fluid to the sample. Be sure to use warm water, as the temperature of the sample is recorded. Most facilities will put you in a room with no sink, and where the toilet water is tinted.Diluting a sample will lower the specific gravity and creatinine level.(creatine is used by muscles and creates a waste product called creatinine) Drug testing laboratories all routinely test samples to detect dilution.[1]

Internal dilution or "flushing". Many people assume that drinking excessive amounts of water will accomplish a negative result,However is it dangerous (people have died from water intoxication) it is also risky because colorless urine arouses suspicion, possibly flagging the sample and causing Them to run the sample at a lower CONFIRMATION level of 15 ng/mL (15 nanograms per milliliter) instead of a STANDARD test screen level of 50 ng/mL (this example is of THC). When the UA is run before the screen it will read that the Specific Gravity is low and it will be flagged, this also will cause a lower level test to be run [2]

Substitute the sample. Substitution is a method that involves substituting your urine with that of another persons or a synthetic sample. Synthetic urine comes in two basic forms, the liquid type found in smoke shops that is similar to what is used to calibrate lab equipment or vials of a powdered concentrate that can be added to a few ounces of warm water. Both are kept in a delivery devise with a temperature meter. This method works on every employment urine test,(provided some conditions are met such as controlling the temperature (92 -100)and delivering the sample in 4 minutes or less). A liquid crystal thermometer with 2 degree offset like the ones used on the collection cups is ideal and a properly sized organic warmer as a insulating source as it is the body that is the regulator. [3]

The liquide premixed urine has a couple of drawbacks as it doesn't have a head or small layer of bubbles on the surface and it has no smell.Powdered synthetic urine does.

You can substitute someone else's urine. You will want to test it with a reagent panel strip available at wallgreens. Collect the urine fresh and keep it in a sealed, refrigerated container, and use within 48Hrs. {as urine will darken and bacteria will grow}. You can also freeze the urine for longer storage. If deterioration becomes noticeable the lab may suspect something. A UTI or Urinary Tract Infection will be suspected if a micro UA is run as stale urine becomes like ammonia and the ph will change.[4]

standard employment Drug tests do not determine male or female, pregnancy, or age.

  Hair Testing

Understand how the hair testing process works. So how does hair drug testing work?, Let's delve into this a bit for better understanding. We'll use marijuana for our example since marijuana drug testing is by far and away the most popular test. When marijuana (THC) metabolites are in the blood, they'll end up in the blood vessels, including those in the head, and get filtered through the hair. In basic terms, at least, this is how hair drug testing comes about. The marijuana THC metabolites will remain in the hair as a permanent record of drug use for months. A hair drug test involves cutting 50-80 strands of hair from the base typically at the crown of the head.Minimum length of 1 inch is necessary or body hair such as face chest or underarm hair can be used. Hair drug testing can go back months, showing the toxins a person may have used in a time-line fashion.Masking hair is not realistic as the sample is washed to remove left in products or external contamination such as second hand smoke.

Know what to expect in the test. Hair Collection Procedure:

Testing requires a swatch of hair about one eighth of an inch in diameter and an inch to an inch and a half long, cut close to the scalp and at the crown of the head if present. If the donor has no head hair or 1/2 inch or shorter the collector may use chest, underarm, leg, or face hair in that order of preference.

Find an appropriate spot for hair collection, then twist a bundle of hair making sure the tightly twisted hair is more than 1/4 inch in diameter. This is almost always done in middle back of head

While holding the tightly twisted hair in one hand, spread open the hair collection tube with the other hand, then enclose the twisted hair in the collection tube as close to the donor's scalp as possible

Place the twist tie around the hair below the plastic collection tube. This keeps the hair intact during shipping and also indicates the root end.

Cut the hair bundle as close to the scalp as possible. Do not remove the collection tube from the cut hair.

Return the collection tube holding the hair to its original position in the hair collection tube holder. Do not remove the twist tie.

Lower toxin levels in your hair. This can be much harder if cocaine or synthetic drugs are used by dark haired people as it is the melanin (hair color)that is the carrier as apposed to keratin (hair) in a THC screen. Treatment with Toxin Removaland a professional Consultation from a laboratory technician providing the know how in Hair Structure are crucial to increasing your success.

Cocaine which binds to black hair far more than blond or red hair as it is the melanin in hair that is the carrier of cocaine. So repeated use in dark hair people is almost impossible to reduce below detectable levels.[5]

Regular smokers should use a clarifying shampoo regularly to remove toxins that are excreted daily from scalp.

Saliva / Oral fluid-based screen
Saliva / oral fluid-based drug tests can generally detect use during the previous few days. Saliva or oral fluid based drug tests are becoming more prevalent because of their convenience, low cost and the recent adaptation of the FDA approved Intercept test can be given in-house on the job for pre-employment and random screenings, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, or return-to-duty testing.
Detection Times
Detection in saliva tests begins immediately upon use:
Marijuana and hashish (THC): An hour after ingestion, and up to 24 hours depending on use.
Cocaine (including crack): From time of ingestion up to 2 to 3 days.
Opiates: From time of ingestion up to 2 to 3 days
Methamphetamine and ecstasy (MDMA, "crank," "ice"): From time of ingestion up to 2 to 3 days.
Benzodiazepines: From time of ingestion up to 2 to 3 days
Testing Avoidance
If one is being tested and has used in the past 3 days you will need to overcome the saliva collection. To do this you will have to avoid submitting saliva and perform the steps requested of you by the instructor.

Instruct the donor to remove the handle and remove the collection device from the packaging sleeve.

Instruct the donor to place the collection pad between the lower cheek and gums and gently rub the pad back and forth along the gum line until the pad is moist. (you will fake this movement and rub pad on teeth)

Once moist, leave collection pad between cheek and gums for a full two (2) minutes(again hold between teeth)

After 2 minutes, have the donor open the specimen vial in an upright position, with the tip pointed downward, by gently rocking the cap back and forth to avoid spilling the contents. Instruct the donor to push the collection pad into the specimen vial as far as it will go.

The instructor who a employee can not touch the paddle in any way until you place it in the vial screw it closed and seal it in a tamper proof bag.

Stay clean from marijuana at least 72 hrs before the test.

Urban myths

Secondhand smoke.. cut off levels are set so as to keep one failing from casual second hand smoke .

Poppy Seeds.. the current SAMHSA recommended cutoff level used in the NIDA 5 test, which was raised from 300 ng/mL to 2,000 ng/mL in 1998 in order to avoid false positives from poppy seeds You would need to eat a whole Loaf of poppy seed to register for even one day.[6]

Adding bleach to nullify sample. BLEACH will change the ph and flag the sample as being tampered and you will fail. Drinking bleach will blind you and maybe kill you. [7]

Aspirin.... taken before test covers THC by creating a false negative.. THIS IS ONLY UNDER IDEAL CIRCUMSTANCES and only for the EMIT test and not a gc/ms.[8]

Bleaching and redying your hair will not remove the matabolites from hair.

  Legal

Only a court ordered test or one who is on probation or parole can be observed, basically those who have no rights.

Know your rights. They are very important. The employer is paying for the test so it belongs to them. If you pass it will say no detectable amount found. If you fail it will usually say what your levels were, however you need to ask for the cut off levels.

If caught by surprise and you need to stall it is better to go to the lab and fail to show your I.D., refusal will get you fired but if you misplaced your ID you will have to come back or the sample is invalid [9]

At least ten states (Arkansas, Illinois, Maryland, Nebraska, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and Texas) have outlawed the sale of synthetic urine or adulterants for the purpose of passing drug test however obtaining one on the Internet is easy.

Workplace Testing: employers are currently allowed by law to require that workers submit to urinalysis or saliva screening to be considered for employment and/or to retain their employment. states have laws which often limit how and when testing can be done, such as requiring that the company have a written policy, that 'random' testing not be used this is more common in certain unions. [10]

Hospital Testing: In the US, some states have required pregnant women to be tested for illegal drug use as part of their prenatal care. The US Supreme Court ruled the secret testing of women unconstitutional in the case of Ferguson v City of Charleston, in March 2001.But women who arrive to deliver in a hospital have there blood tested and if dirty you can bet you will be talking to some people.A delivering mother could face endangerment charges or even murder if ANY traces are found in her blood.[11]

Drug Testing Law

Federal Law - Drug testing falls under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which includes several key features:

The ADA makes it illegal for any employer to test a prospective employee without first making a conditional offer of employment.

The ADA also says you can´t discriminate against prospective employees on the basis of past drug-related problems. Then again, you may refuse to hire people if you have reason to believe they will return to substance abuse or endanger the safety and health of your workers. If you aren´t sure how to proceed with an applicant who has a history of drug abuse, consult an attorney. The ADA doesn´t prohibit asking a person with a history of substance abuse to enroll in a rehabilitation program before joining your firm.

State Law - Laws vary from state to state and change frequently. You can find out the details of your state´s drug testing laws by contacting a trade organization, your state government or an employment lawyer. Your right to test workers for drug use depends on several factors:

The job itself. If a job has the potential to place the employee, coworkers or the public in danger, there may be stronger legal justification to test for drugs.

Evidence of a drug problem. Some states require you to show probable cause to suspect employees are impaired before testing them for drugs.

Whether the worker is already on staff. Once applicants are hired, your rights to test them for drug use may diminish. Some states require visible evidence of substance abuse such as an accident, a visible decline in work quality or the discovery of illicit drugs in the workplace before you have the legal right to test a current employee. Testing current employees at random or without prior notice is also illegal in many states.

Video

Related wikiHows

How to Quit Drinking Alcohol Using Anti Craving Medication

How to Discontinue Rivotril

How to Endure Acute Withdrawal from Opiates (Narcotics)

How to Withdraw from Methadone

Sources and Citations

↑ The Challenge of Dilute Specimens

↑ [1]

↑ Urine container

↑ Urine PH changes

↑ ethnic bias in hair drug testing

↑ [2]

↑ [3]

↑ Drug abuse Handbook pg. 770

↑ DOT Collection Procedures

↑ [4]

↑ [5]

How to Detox for a test.

Article provided by wikiHow, a wiki how-to manual. Smoking marijuana has many effects on the body and also stays in your system for a considerable ammount of time. It is the question how long does marijuana stay in your system that I will hopefully help answer here.

So, exactly how long does marijuana stay in your system? Well that's not easy to answer. Marijuana itself does not stay in your system you know, but the main chemical in marijuana, THC, does.

Despite being stored in body fat, THC is only detectable for a certain amount of time. Many drug tests, including urine tests, look for 9-carboxy-THC which is the by-product of your body metabolizing the THC in your fat.

To really answer the question of how long marijuana stays in your system depends on a number of variables like, your height, weight, metablolism and how much and often you have smoked marijuana and also how active you are.

How long does marijuana stay in your urine? For an average male who smoked occasionally THC could be detected in urine up to ten days after smoking marijuana. For someone who smokes a lot or is a frequent user, marijuana can be detected in urine up to three months after smoking.

How long does marijuana stay in your blood? Well, blood tests are slightly different for detecting marijuana in your system. An occasional smoker of weed may show signs of marijuana being in your system up to three days after smoking weed. A heavy or frequent smoker of marijuana may find that traces of marijuana can be found up to three weeks after smoking pot.

I am sure you will agree that the question of "how long does marijuana stay in your system" can not easily be answered.

How to flush marijuana out your system? There are ways to flush marijuana out of your system. Some natural ways are to drink plenty of cranberry juice and take vitamin b complex which does turn your urine yellow so please if taking a marijuana drugs test do not use at least 24 hours before.

If you are worried about finding THC in your system the there are many marijuana detox kits available. However it should be stated that no definitive proof of this has been accepted by the medical establishment, with some having stated that cannabis has no such long-term effects.

There are some physical health risks, particularly the possibility of damage to the airways in cannabis smokers. Some research has suggested that cannabis can cause lung cancer in its own right in heavy users, and this is something all users should be aware of. On the other hand, there has as yet been no connection drawn between cannabis use alone and heart disease. Bear in mind though that cannabis does, at least, produce tar when burnt even without tobacco.

Other effects are listed below:

Attention span decreases.

Co-ordination is affected which impairs the ability to be a safe driver or operate machinery.

Dry mouth, sore eyes.

Increased heart rate.

THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol), the active ingredient, is stored in the body's fat cells for many days or weeks.

Impaired perception.

short-term memory loss

Psychological dependency.

Many people in relationships whose partners smoke are negatively affected.

Effects Of Smoking Weed

What are the effecrs of smoking weed? Well to start off lets talk a bit about what it is. Weed goes by many names, such as cannabis, which is the scientific name, marijuana, ganja, pot, grass and hemp. It was well established in many cultures for both ritual and recreational use. Weed has been classed as an illegal drug for over a century. In fact, Greece and Turkey made it's use illegal from as far back as 1890.

Today, its psychoactive properties make it popular with people from many walks of life, from college students to musicians. It has been well documented however that using marijuana can have an adverse effect on the health.

Different forms of cannabis are made from different parts of the cannabis plant. It comes in a solid dark lump commonly known as resin or hash; dried leaves, stalks and seeds known as grass or weed and also a brown or black sticky oil. Cannabis can be rolled with tobacco in whats known as a spliff or joint, smoked on its own in a special pipe or even eaten.

There are different strengths of cannabis - skunk is the generic name often used to describe a potent form of the cannabis plant. In fact, skunk is only one of 100 or so varieties of cannabis plant which have high levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is the main psychoactive ingredient in cannabis.
What are the effects of smoking weed?

Smoking weed makes most people who use it relaxed, talkative and sometimes giggly.

Heightens the senses, especially when it comes to colours, taste, and music.

Cooking and eating hash makes the effects more intense and much harder to control.

Can also leave people feeling tired and lacking energy.

May bring on cravings (AKA 'the munchies') for certain foods

The effects of smoking cannabis can also have other issues associated with it. For example there are long term effects of smoking cannabis which are not good. For information about the long term effects, read the long term effects of smoking weed post

Controlling Your Breathing

Many people, myself included, do not breathe properly, and hold tension in their body while breathing. Years of poor posture, nerves and anxiety are most likely to be the cause of this. This will result in poor breathing patterns.

Ideally we should be breathing full, deep breaths from our lower abdomen.

If you feel nervous, anxious, or catch yourself breathing high in the chest, you can follow this simple 4 step technique to “vacuum your lungs” and reset your diaphragm back to a deep breathing pattern.

Resetting your Diaphragm

1. Exhale completely, blow out every single bit of air from your lungs as best you can.

2. Bend over Forwards. It helps to fold your arms in front of your stomach when you bend to get that extra little bit of air out. Bending over releases the last bits of air from your lungs. When you’re totally out of air make sure you hold you breath, so you don’t accidentally let any air in.

3. Stand up while holding your breath. This increases lung volume, so air will want to flow into your lungs, but don’t breathe. Wait about 10 seconds until your body really needs a breath.

4. Then, when you can’t take much more, Breathe! Your body will have moved over from your normal, everyday breathing to unregulated, autonomic “response breathing.” You should feel your breathing has switched to deep and rhythmic breathing.

That’s all there is to it. Once you let your body take that unregulated breath in step 4, your nervous system reboots your lungs, and your previous tense and anxious breath becomes a thing of the past.

I recommend performing this technique, then breathing deeply for a couple of minutes to ingrain the positive feeling of breathing deeply and fully.

How to use your Diaphragm

In order to get back to a good breathing pattern, try doing this little exercise of practising to use your diaphragm a couple of times a day:

1. Sit in an upright position looking straight ahead. You can close your eyes if it helps you to concentrate on the process.

2. Put one palm on your upper chest and the other over your navel. (Your objective is to have the lower hand rise first when you breathe in.)

3. Breathe out gently and effortlessly. Now wait for a second or two until the body spontaneously begins the inhalation - this will occur naturally and of its own accord.

4. Allow the air to naturally flow in again until it stops, again of its own accord. Make no effort , whatsoever, to in any way deepen the inhalation. You are allowing your body to find its own natural rate of breathing and, through relaxing into the process, allowing your breathing to slow down and become more and more shallow. Remember your aim is to relax and to conserve your ‘natural tranquilliser’ - to counter the effects of losing carbon dioxide caused by anxious, rapid, upper chest breathing.

5. Continue doing this for about 5 to 10 minutes.

Tips On How To Stop Smoking Weed

It has been discovered that there is a definite trick to knowing how to stop smoking weed and that trick is fooling your mind. Even though people say that marijuana is not physically addictive, anyone who has actually used marijuana and smoked weed regularly understands that the brain definitely becomes accustomed to being under the influence of it. There are also for many cannabis smokers, physical withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety and insomnia that occur when they quit. So, this brings us to the point of this post today.

My top tips for how to stop smoking weed are:

1. You Need to Set a Quit Date. This is to allow yourself to get totally ready to quit smoking weed. Your quit date should be an actual date. It should not be when your stash runs out. I recommend setting your quit date, within one month of the current date. If you wait any longer, you are less likely to follow through with your goal. It is a great idea to set your quit date just before a vacation begins, or other major event. While you are away you will not be able to get hold of any gear and so you can use the time to evaluate your life. Quitting Marijuana is a big lifestyle change no doubt about it. If you attach it to another lifestyle change, you are more likely to be successful.

2. Stay Active. When a person is going through the quitting process part of their body just wants them to lay down and take it easy. Because stopping marijuana can increase stress and discomfort, many marijuana addicts think that the best policy is to simply ride it out on the couch or drink a few beers or more and pass out. This is completely the wrong way to go about quitting. What you want to do is energise your body in an activity of some kind be it walking the dog or doing sports or other form of exercise. When you are actively moving around, your brain has to fire up to control your movements. Because of this your brain does not lie “idle” thinking over and over again about how it does not have any marijuana. This is the key really we want to forget about smoking. Therefore, if you have some friends that are into football, basketball, whatever it may be, trying to spend some time every day participating in some form of physical exercise can help you successfully quit marijuana by getting you through those dreaded first few days.

3. Get Rid Of Your Gear. This is a vital step. By doing this you are confirming to yourself that you are serious about quitting. Also if you get rid of any marijuana related products and clean out your environment this can be extremely beneficial to you. Now you have no signs of your previous activities you can start to plan out how you are going to carry on with your new life.

4. Be Prepared for Withdrawal. Not being prepared for cannabis withdrawal is the number one reason that people fail to quit smoking. If you've got a quit date set, you're already ahead of the game, because you know when you will be going through withdrawal, and you'll be prepared. Anxiety is very common in the first stages of withdrawal. For example, you have probably been through a time when you just run out of pot and have made plans to get more but it didn't work out. You are on edge and jittery until you can secure a new supply, or at least get stoned. Multiply this by 10 times, you will have an idea of what the anxiety can be like if you are unprepared to quit for good. Insomnia and loss of appetite are also common in the first week of quitting.
